This invention relates to a method of bonding an automotive body component to a facing and more particularly to a method for bonding a facing such as an instrument panel to the automotive body component such as a door panel to which a decorative trim component such as a quarter window trim is bonded.
2. Description of the Prior Art
As is well known, a trim component of the kind referred to above is generally bonded to a body panel using an adhesive agent. In the case of a decorative trim component such as a quarter window trim, the adhesive agent used for bonding the trim component to the body panel is required to have satisfactory heat resistance, resistance to chemicals, strength of bonding and the like in addition to the necessary bonding strength required for the trim component. The adhesive agent is generally made of a silicone resin, phenolic resin, acrylic resin and the like which is thermosetting type. However, it is difficult to obtain a satisfactory adhesive agent having a combination of these characteristics, and the development of an improved adhesive agent is a problem to be solved. Further, the adhesive agent is susceptible to bleeding and is difficult to apply by a conventional spraying method. It is also difficult to obtain a sufficient adhesive strength after the bonding.
On the other hand, a decurtain having the structure of a facing is generally used to protect the appearance of a trim component or to improve its appearance. The decurtain is bonded to the body panel using a thermoplastic resin having flexibility such as polyvinyl chloride resin, polyurethane resin or polycarbonate resin by an adhesive agent. It is difficult to obtain a satisfactory adhesive agent having a combination of heat resistance, resistance to chemicals and the like in addition to the necessary bonding strength and the like. In order to obtain a sufficient adhesive strength, a thick adhesive agent is generally used to increase the adhesive strength, but this is not desirable because it is detrimental to the appearance of the body panel.
In order to solve the problems described above, it is proposed in Japanese Laid-Open Patent Application (Kokai) No. 61-272342 to use an adhesive sheet which comprises a sheet of a thermoplastic resin having flexibility and a sheet of an adhesive agent having flexibility and strength. In the adhesive sheet, the sheet of adhesive agent is laminated on the surface of the sheet of thermoplastic resin and the sheet of adhesive agent is laminated on the surface of the sheet of thermoplastic resin opposite to the surface on which the 0b46394aab
